Flex HR is the Product of a Military Mindset
July 02 2008
Commanding military units is not unlike running a company's human resources department. That’s what Jim Cichanski, 55, owner of Atlanta-based Flex HR, Inc., has found in his more than 25 years of military and human resources experience.

After his time managing soldiers had concluded, Cichanski continued to use the skills he learned in the military when he started Flex HR, Inc. almost five years ago. With the concept of offering top-level human resources leadership on a part-time, contractual basis, Cichanski and his team of 14 highly qualified professionals act as HR vice presidents for nearly 100 corporate clients. Most of their clients are located in Georgia, but companies in at least six other states-Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana and New Jersey-also use their services.
Flex HR’s consultants visit with CEOs and assess their HR needs, including issues relating to compliance with labor laws and effective staffing. "It's a jungle out there," said Cichanski, "once a company grows to over 30 employees, additional labor laws come in to play—enough to keep any CEO awake at night." Cichanski and his associates have managed to grasp principles that can turn a company around, and Flex HR, Inc. does the job of a human resources director on about a 20 percent rate compared to what companies would pay to hire a full-time professional.
"Our type of clients either hire human resources executives lacking sufficient business acumen who can't do the strategic piece, or they spend too much and hire individuals who may have strategic vision but an inability to relate to the human part of the corporate equation," Cichanski said. "And if they do hire at that level, only approximately 20 percent of that person’s time is devoted to high-level executive work. The result is 80 percent of the time is spent doing clerical work—a very poor return on investment," commented Cichanski.
According to Cichanski, Flex HR, Inc. has been successful because it offers businesses a solution to human resources needs through a unique, niche business. Others might say that Flex HR, Inc. is successful because Cichanski manages HR accounts the way he managed soldiers—systematically, efficiently and effectively.
